A psychiatric disorder that causes a number of recurring and unwanted thoughts (obsessions), that drive the person to do something repetitively (compulsions), or both. Obsessions and compulsions are time consuming, and more often than not, interfere with daily living and social functioning. An estimate of 1 in 40 adults and 1 in 100 children in the United States has OCD.

Having some levels of anxiety is normal, and even healthy for a person to have. But when extreme fear or worry is present in everyday life, and the person is avoiding places or situations to prevent these feelings, it becomes a psychiatric disorder. Some examples of anxiety disorders include: generalized anxiety disorders, social anxiety disorder, specific phobias, separation anxiety disorder, etc. National prevalence data indicate that nearly 40 million people in the United States (18 percent) experience an anxiety disorder in any given year.

Aims to change faulty or unhelpful ways of thinking and learned patterns of unhelpful behavior. In CBT the psychologist and patient/client work together, to develop an understanding of the problem and to develop a treatment strategy leading to significant improvement in functioning and quality of life. CBT is appropriate for people of all ages and an address numerous conditions, such as major depressive disorder, anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder, eating disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, and many others.
